#CureThroughCommunity

Today I hosted my first digital read aloud to my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders.

This pandemic, and the way our leadership is responding to it, must not keep us down, must not make us fear, and must not stop us from believing in the power of a good story. "He considered fainting.
He deemed it the only reasonable response to the situation in which he found himself in, but then he remembered the words of the threadmaster: honor, courtesy, devotion, and bravery.
'I will be brave,' thought Despereaux.
How best for him to be brave?
He cleared his throat. He let go of his tail. He stood up straighter. 'Once upon a time,' he said out loud to the darkness. He said these words because they were the best, most powerful words that he knew and just saying them comforted him."

Happy National Poetry Month!
We have decided to try (we use that word loosely) to supply you all with writing prompts every day this month as a way to #CureThroughCommunity. If you use the prompt, tag us in your story, or post it online using the hashtag, and we will share some of our favorites.
We can not wait to see what you all create!
P.s. this might be a great idea for even those that do not consider themselves “creatives”. You got this!

Sometimes, you need to let the darkness out before you can see the light. As we progress through #NationalPoetryMonth, this prompt is to get all of us in the practice of shaking off the dust! Share your answers if you're feeling brave enough, and tag us so we can show it off in our story! Let's #UniteThroughDiatribe and find a #CureThroughCommunity ♡ ...

Taking the prompt from the_diatribe for #nationalpoetrymonth. Directions were to take a selfie and write about yourself using loving and positive language.

More hair on my head than there could be by now
Every grey earned through experience and grit
A wisdom in my eyes that did not show in photos from my youth
A little redness, ever present, reminds that blood is still flowing
My heart may have tried to stop the flow, it was tired
But my soul was stronger and held on to life
In the end it’s unknown how this journey will end
But those who walk beside me make all the difference

Standing in front of nearly 1,000 students reminiscing about the first time I took the stage.
I was in high school, I was terrified, but I never would have guessed that I would be working with students one day preparing them to read for their entire school.
This year I met so many young people that can and will change the world, they will go so much farther than me, and I’m SO excited to watch them continue to soar. 📷 zmbiephrsh

Woo! When we say this filled our cup, y'all, we mean it!!
.
.
This email is from a 9th grader who goes to the Grand Rapids Public Museum School. He wrote us to let us know his own thoughts about justice, and about how our work has inspired him! At the end of the email is the sweetest line: "I have been working hard and saved up for a few months now, I hope 200 dollars is enough to achieve new heights." Ahh!! Our hearts are melting!!
Believe us when we tell you, having the leaders of the future propping us up like this will always be what pushes us forward, and we know all too well that community is what takes us to new heights. We will continue to grow so that we can continue to work with phenomenal youth like this one! ❤🔥🔥

Our students are at the heart of our work. Regina (@reginaaaaaa.16 ) has been a part of our programming for the past few years, and we've watched her grow before our eyes into a fierce young poet. We want to shower her with love because we recently got the news she's been accepted into a prestigious program at @interlochenarts academy!!! Congratulations Regina! You are deserving of every blessing in your life. Watch out for the next generation of creatives, y'all, I promise you'll be hearing about her in the future! ...

As an organization that lives and breathes for our community, we are so grateful to be held in the same regard by those around us. The love we are receiving in an otherwise hard time has been incredibly uplifting. @woosahoutfitters has created these 4 posters, uplifting words 4 of our org's teaching artists through paper and ink! Every message is from a black artist living in Grand Rapids, speaking truth to black experience in our country. This is what #doingthework looks like, y'all!!!
We are so overjoyed to see the final product of this very emotional project. Huge thank you to Woosah Outfitters. (Did we mention only 100 of these babies will be released??)

😍🔥 Shoutout to the teaching artists/staff involved:

Society programs people into believing that it is normal to dislike what they do, that work isn’t enjoyable, and that successful dreamers are one in a million.
We live to shatter that false narrative, and manifest thoughts into becoming things.
